Don’t let the idea of a wine tasting intimidate you. It can be a lot of fun and it is a skill that can be learned. When you are ready to learn how to taste wine, you will find out that the mystery behind wine tasting is easily dismissed.

But for less experienced wine tasters this may be a challenge, especially if you can’t tell the difference between a red and a white wine with your eyes closed. Here are a few tips that will help you get the most out of wine tasting.

The first impressions are critical. Take into account what you see on the label and in the shape and color of the bottle. Labels give a lot of information like winemaker, vintage, country of origin, and sometimes the great variety. You can also tell a lot about the wine by the shape of the bottle and the color of the bottle.

Now let’s pour a glass. Before you do anything you want to look at the wine in the glass. Swirl it and observe the colors. Light green hue’s can indicate a grassiness, while purple hues can indicate youth in a red wine.

Color differences can be very subtle, and can indicate many aspects of the wine. For example, colors in white wines give different flavors, or might indicate age. You could also tilt the glass to observe the color of the wine’s “rim.” In wine tasting, a purple color in the rim could indicate a young wine, while brown could mean a mature wine.

Now you want to get in there and smell the wine. Over 90% of the wines profile will be found in the smell. These or all of the characteristics like floral, fruity, tobacco, and chocolate will come from. Take note of the things that you smell in the wine.

Lastly, taste the wine. Because it swirl it in your mouth and suck in air. You want to allow the air to oxygenate the wine and develop a flavor in your mouth. Note whether you can paste saltiness sweetness or bitterness.

Now that you have the whining and mouth, think about what your first impressions are. Is the wine very tannic? Is it sweet? then you can swallow or spit the wine out. See along the wine lingers.

Experimentation is all part of the fun and wine tasting. For those that are very enthusiastic about wines, it starts out as a hobby and often turns into a passion. The best thing to do is get out there and taste wine. Even if you don’t know what you’re doing you can have a lot of fun. As time goes on, your frame of reference grows and you’re able to compare and contrast even more.
