What To Look For When Choosing A Decorative Wine Rack

France is possibly the country most famous for producing fine wines. As a matter of fact, when many people think of fine wine, they think of French wine first.

The wines that are produced in Spain taste fruitier rather than woody.

But they are working on the problem and they are making some progress.

There are many fine wines that are produced in Europe, and you really can say that Europe is wine country. There are many reasons for this, not least our own preference for well-known grape varieties at cheap prices. I have also written before about the wines of Slovenia, which are well worth seeking out.

As with so many UK gastronomic trends, other countries cottoned on to the simple pleasures offered by a carefully selected wines from Eastern-Europe. In this case, we speak about Hungarian Wine. Hungary is a land-locked country in central Europe. It has an interesting and distinctive cuisine that includes many unique recipes.

The tsars of Russia were huge fans, and a century ago it was listed on all the fine-wine lists of Europe, alongside Ch d'Yquem and the great German sweet wines. Once the communist regime fell, there was a rush of foreign investment, much of it from Bordeaux.

Tokaji lies in the far northeast of Hungary, in the hills that run alongside the Bodrog river. Most of the wines are sweet, but all have a wonderful refreshing acidity that gives them great balance. Tokaji is made from Furmint, Hárslevelü and Muskotály . The sweet wines, known as Tokaji Aszu, are made with grapes affected by noble rot, a sought-after botrytis that works wonders on sweet wines. The most concentrated, free-run juice is used to make Essencia, the sweetest and most expensive Tokaji, which is so rich in sugars it can take years to ferment up to a measly 5 per cent. The crushed grapes from the puttonyos are added to tanks of dry wine, producing wines whose sweetness is measured in puttonyos. Six puttonyos is the sweetest, two puttonyos the driest. Between Tokaji and Budapest lies Eger, once famous for that most manly of wines, Bull's Blood, a huge, meaty mouthful of wine. There have been efforts to resurrect the style. The best dry whites come from the dark volcanic soil along the northern shore. There is some excellent Pinot Gris (known locally as Szürkebarát) alongside a host of other local white varieties. While not all would aspire to greatness, there are some fascinating wines. In the far west of the country in Villány on the border with Croatia, Bordeaux varieties excel, the two Cabernets in particular, alongside the traditional local grapes Kadarka and Kékfrankos.

Importance of Wine Racks

Even though Italy produces close to 8,000,000,000, bottles of wine every year, the vinters have kept to the same high quality standard of making wine that has a legacy of over 4,000 years. As a result of this Italy has some of the most unique and quality wines on the globe, as well as having the most grape varieties that are locally produced than any country in the world.

One of the bigger deliberations with Italy's unique wine style is the wide scope of assorted cultures that exist all the way through its 20 wine regions. Each of these cultures has a vigorous sense of pride that translates openly into wine production. At the height of it understanding Italian wine making is hard enough, but to those who's knowledge is rather limited, it is practically impossible.

Like any journey of consequence it's best to take it step by step. While Italian wine is both vastly complex and inconsistent, there are some concrete starting points.

First, let's take a look at the general qualities of Italian wine:

Italian wines have a tendency to be very acidic, this is mainly because wines that contain high levels of acidity are well suited with food. It is hardly then that the prominent food cultures in the Italian society have opted for wine that compliments their astounding commitment to cuisine! This means white wines are inclined to be brusque and red wines are more likely to be firm.

Submissive, earthy aromas - One of the paramount qualities of Italian wines is the touch of the land that one can smell and taste in every bottle. The nose might have hints of mushrooms, soil, minerals and grass. These merits are usually referred to as an earthiness that stops the wine from competing with food.

Medium Body - Though there are quite a few wines that are heavier (such as Barolo), the majority of wines are medium bodied in nature. Again, more appropriate to the wide selection of food dishes that achieve better when not weighed down by heaviness.

Distinctly Italian Grapes - While most of the grapes found in the world are grown in Italy, it also has many grape varieties that are only grown in the wine regions of the particular regions. Nebbiolo, is a good example, this is the grape that used to formulate Barolo and is only ever found in Piedmont and Lombardy regions.

Because of the climate in Italy is so perfect for cultivating grapes, much of the grape varieties have been evolving over the last several thousand years. It is because of this that trying to transplant vines to other regions proves immensely difficult.

Major Red Grapes

There are over 20 key varieties of red grapes growing in Italy, but we are going to start with what are debatably the most significant 3:

Sangiovese (san joe VAE sae) - Planted in many vineyards throughout the Italian country side, particularly in Tuscany and Umbria, this is the main grape in the making of Chianti and the ever popular Super-Tuscan wines. Medium in body, the wine will then posses high levels of tannins and strong acidity with flavours of herbs and cherries.

Nebbiolo(nehb be OH loh) - explicit to the Piedmont district, this varity of grape produces 2 of infamous Italian most wines: Barolo and Barbaresco. For anyone who is considering starting up there own wine cellar these 2 wines are the must haves. The grape is intense with elevated levels of acidity and high tannin levels, calling forth flavours of strawberries, mushrooms and truffles.

Barbera (bar BAE rah) - This grape runs side by side with Sangiovese as the most popular grape variety in italy. This particular grape is a good bit lighter than its partner, the tannin levels are a good bit lower while it still maintains it high acidity levels. The fruity flavours are inclined to be more distinct than in other grapes, it is for this reason that this wine is excellent when enjoyed in the summer.

Important Italian Whites

Pinot Grigio(pee noh GREE joe) - The Italian version of Pinot Gris, this grape in particylar has been haled all around the globe. Although the pinot grigio grape is not as flavourable as it French cousin, it boasts a high acidity with mineral flavours and peaches.

Trebbiano (trehb bee AH noh) - This grape is very familiar in Italy, it has also suffered from casual growing habits. This white grape variety is known for its production of lower class white wines, it is known for its proclivity for producing bland and highly crisp wines as well.

Tocai Friulano (toh KYE free oo LAH no) - For those pinot grigio lovers out there, you will like this grape variety. With the attributes of freshness and bitterness associated with Italian grapes, it can also bring rich and full textures that are more intricate than is usual for whites of this class. It grows for the most part in the Friuli province.

Verdicchio and Vernaccia - These grapes have some of the same body, crispness and acidity as Trebbino, but with a bit more life. Richer flavours and aromas including hints of lemon and sea air are common. They are usually un-oaked.

A person could easily spend an entire lifetime studying this grapes and wine of the Italian country side, especially when these wines are associated with certain foods in there respective areas.

Custom Wine Racks ? Do you Really Need One

Fret not! If you have been planning on trying to make wine at home, read the following equipment guide to have a basic idea of their function as well as usage in wine-making.

The standard pieces of equipments are: carboys, airlock, siphon, hydrometer and thermometer.

A carboy refers to a container used in fermentation of wine. In wine making language, the container is also known as a demijohn. For making wine at home, you can use any container you like given that it's cleaned and sterilized. Another important criterion is that you have to be able to attach an airlock to the container. This brings us to the next question, what's an airlock?

An airlock is a simple device that allows air to escape from the container, however at the same time, stopping external air from entering the container. The reason for using this instrument is to prevent harmful bacteria from infecting your wine. As you may probably know, air in the surrounding environment is full of dust particles and bacteria and these are harmful to wine fermentation as they can result in spoilage of wine. Hence, with an airlock, carbon dioxide created in the course of fermentation can escape the container and outside air (with bacteria) are unable to enter the container to infect the wine.

The next instrument is a siphon and the function is very simple - to transfer liquid from one container to the other. For home wine-making, it is very common to see 5 gallons (20 litres) of wine being made. Hence, to transfer such substantial amount of wine from one container to the other, wine maker usually use an auto-siphon to make this process as easy as possible.

The next device is a hydrometer and it is required to determine the alcohol level of your wine. How do you know that the wine you make is really wine? What is the alcohol content? To answer all these questions, wine maker make use of a hydrometer. The hydrometer checks the relative density of the liquid and base on how much this relative density has decreased during fermentation, wine maker are able to estimate the alcohol content of the wine they are making.

The last equipment is a thermometer and it requires little explanation for it's function, what you should know is the purpose of having to determine the temperature. The purpose of measuring the temperature of your wine is to ensure proper fermentation. Wine yeast flourishes in ambient temperature of 70-80 Fahrenheit (21-27 Celsius). If the temperature is not within these ranges, yeast will not grow well and this will certainly have an impact on wine fermentation.

In Search for a Perfect Wine Rack

Since nearly all bottled wine gets better with age, wine enthusiasts want an easy method to store their wine bottles. Below you will find some free wine rack plans for a decidedly simple wall-mounted bottle storage rack that beautifully displays your wine collection.
We describe several layouts and wine rack dimensions to help you utilise all your available wall space for your wine rack plans to begin.
The wine rack plans will utilise efficient use of materials; and you will not believe that you will be able to to securely hold so many bottles with so little wood.

To build wine rack from my wine rack plans correctly you will need all of these materials first.

Wine Rack Plans - Material List

Item #1. wood. the amount will vary based on the shape and size of the wine rack plans you choose to make. with a board 3/4" x 6" x 39" (20 x 150 x 1000mm) you can make two racks that hold 6 bottles each.

Item #2. finishing oil or just use paint with primer

Item #3. mounting screws (length and type vary dependent on the wall you are mounting to). refer to the wine rack design consideration section at the end of this plan for more details.

Wine Rack Plans - Tool List

table saw - drill press and 1 1/2" diameter drill bit - bandsaw - jigsaw or scrollsaw - sandpaper - drum sanding attachment for drill press or spindle sander - optional router with rounder bit.

Wine Rack Plans - Mounting The Wine Rack

To utilise these wine rack plans for your wall mounted wine rack design, you need to firmly fasten it to the wall or other rigid surface. Finding wall studs would be ideal, but using toggle bolts is as good. If you have plaster, or brick walls, use the appropriate fasteners. If you want to hide the screw heads (nails will probably not be strong enough) you should drill a counterbore to recess the screw head below the surface of the wood; you can cover these holes with plugs later on.

Wine Rack Plans - Layout

There are many wine rack plans - wine rack dimensions - layouts -  that you can employ to build wine rack differently to maximise the bottle-holding capacity to your wall space. You can arrange several of these racks in parallel orientation or in contrasting angles. See the images on the margin for some options: use your imagination.

Wine rack Plans - Wine Rack Design Consideration

This wine rack is very versatile and can handle several alterations and customisations.

dimensions

Thickness: We use a standard board for our wall wine rack, and stability is not an issue as long as it is safely fastened to your wall. We would not recommend you use thinner stock, but thick stock is acceptable. You might need to test the thickness by drilling a hole in some scrap wood and testing how the bottles react. Width: The distance between the center line of the holes and the wall should be at least 2" so that most standard size wine bottles will fit. You use larger dimensions to handle larger size wine bottle diameters. Using wider boards is not at all necessary and very wasteful. Length:You can increase or decrease on the length that we used. Make sure that you have enough width so you can mount the wine rack to the wall. Distance between holes: Place your holes 6" apart. I have tested many different wine rack dimensions for these wine rack plans, and discovered that 6" was the best by far.

materials

Try using cherry wood because you might have some left over to make a diy wine rack. Just about all types of wood is suitable. You shouldn't stray from wood though because it is very tough and strong and will be best for the job, yet soft enough so that you will not have to worry about scratching or breaking the wine glass bottles.

When you are choosing your pattern, keep in mind that you may want to minimise the interior radii to the size of your smallest sanding drum. If you can't get into those spaces with a power sanding device, the sanding step will be a lot more time-consuming. Please understand that you can use a simple rectangular piece for this project; it would be much easier to make but will use unnecessary material. The wave pattern shown in the margin may be attractive, but since it is not symmetrical, the opposing piece of wood would not have a matching pattern, so there would be a lot more wasted material.

finishing

Now that your Wine Rack Plans have all come together nicely for your wine rack there are just a few more things to get done.With all of your pieces sanded, they are ready for a finish. Try using a stain and follow with a polyurethane. I like the antique oil which is an oil/ varnish blend consisting of mineral spirits, oil, and a spar varnish. After painting it on with a brush and waiting for about 5 to 10 minutes, I wiped off all the excess with a very clean rag,then I just let it dry overnight and repeated the exact process three more times to make it richer.

You've decided you want to try making some wind from home. This article will steer you in the right direction and describe the basic steps to making the best tasting and best quality wine from home.

First thing to consider is how much wine you want to make.

You should make at least 5 gallons and the reason why I recommend at least as much is my experience has been that home winemakers, or at least new home winemakers, have difficulty being patient enough to wait for the wine to properly aged to taste what they have made. so you'll end up drinking part of that 5 gallon batch before the wine has really reached its peak quality. and although 5 gallons sounds like a lot of wine it is only 25 bottles. Trust me when I say you want to make at least 5 gallons if not 10. If you make 5 gallons or 25 bottles of wine if you end up drinking five of them before they properly ferment you still have 20 bottles left. proper aging of the wine is one of the most important factors to a wine's quality.

The second thing to consider what type of juice do you want to ferment to make your wine?

There is a lot of choices - grape juice is probably the most popular is also cranberry juice, muscadine, and cherry. Cherry will tend to give you a sweeter wine than the other three. Of course if you like a sweeter wine you can always add sugar after the wine has first stabilized and stopped fermenting.

Sterilizing all the winemaking equipment

There are two ways you can sterilize your wine making equipment : hot water or a sanitizing solution. Personally I prefer sanitizing solution because you don't have to burn yourself or risk burning yourself with scalding hot water. Make sure the sanitizing solution it poured over everything and makes contact with all the surfaces of your winemaking equipment. Then you rinse everything off with hot water.

Pour the juice you will be making the wine with into your 5 gallon bucket but don't put the yeast in quite yet.

Sterilizing the winemaking juice

sterilize the juice you will be making wine with using Campden tablets (4 of them if your making 5 gallons of wine) Campden are sulfite tablets that kill any bacteria that may be in the juice. first you crush the tablets, dissolve them in some warm water, and pour it into your juice. You want this to sit for about 24 hours.

Adding the yeast

Which yeast you're in a use is really beyond a simple article. There are literally hundreds of different types of yeast strains. for your first batch baker's yeast should work okay. (you can find this at any grocery store) as you get a little more experienced at making wine from home you'll probably want to try out different more specialized strains of yeast.

Wait 7 Days

Cover the 5 gallon bucket with a cloth towel or put a lid on with an airlock in place. During this phase, the fermentation stage, the wine mixture will give off a line of carbon dioxide which will protect your wine from the oxygen that is in the air.

Transfer the Wine Mixture into another bucket

after seven days has gone by you need to siphon off the wine into a second bucket or what is called a glass 'carboy'. glass carboy's can be found at your local wine shop or online at a wine making supply house.   When you are siphoning the wine into the second bucket make sure you get as little of the gunk from bottom of the original bucket as you possibly can. The gunk at the bottom is dead yeast and can reduce the quality of the taste of the final product.

Wait a Month

At this point if you want to put an airlock in place and wait a month. This part can be the hardest part for aspiring home winemakers as they are eager and excited to try their own wine. To have a quality finished product however you need to be patient. After the month you want to transfer again back to the other bucket again making sure you leave the gunk on the bottom.

Stabilize the Wine

the stabilizing process inhibits yeast reproduction.   It basically neutralizes the yeast making it inactive. as mentioned above as yeast grows and reproduces it releases carbon dioxide. If this happens after you bottle wine the corks can pop out or explode the bottles. Place in your stabilizer, stir the wine thoroughly, and return it to your secondary carboy fermentation vessel. Be sure to sterilize it first.

Let the Wine Clear

At this point ideally you want a let your wine clear. at this time your wine is most likely a bit cloudy. If you wait another 30 days or so it should be very clear. Again the whole subject of clearing the wine can take up a whole book all by itself.

Bottling Your Delicious Wine!

This is the last step that is left to making your own wine. As with all of your wine making equipment you want to make sure the bottles are cleaned and sanitized. Siphon the wine into the bottles. Forking them can be quite difficult. You want to get some sort of a corking tool. They are not expensive and once again you can get them at your local wine shop or online at a wine supply store. Let your wine sit in the bottles for at least six months up to a year. If you can be patient enough to wait the full year the wine will be of much better quality.
