Is it really possible to make a decent living as a real estate agent in a small NorCal town?

I'm interested in changing careers at 48yrs old and am considering real estate sales in Red Bluff, CA. What kind of commission can I expect my first year? Would I receive a salary for any period of time? What hours are generally involved? What training does California require?

Eeek, Dead Bluff. Hmmm well being as Red Bluff has a low cost of living compared to other metropolitain California areas, I think you will probably have more loss than profit the first year. Real estate agents typically work on a straight commision structure, no salary, although some agencies do offer a draw the first month or so. Being a sucessful real estate agent in any market requires an initial investment from the agent. You have to find your own leads, do your own marketing, pay for your own materials, etc. The pay off is you get sometimes a 60/40 split on comission with your agency.

One good thing about Red Bluff, is it is not too far from Redding, Corning, Chico, etc, and the property in those areas usually have acerage. You could even sell lots in those areas.

As far as hours, that is all up to you. The more flexible you are to the schedules of your potential clients, the more profitable you may be.
